Public Speaking for Public Safety Professionals

Course Overview:

This is a closed session for the organization who curated the training event. Please head back to our course schedule page to explore our open sessions.

You didn’t get into law enforcement to be a public speaker, yet being a leader in the community means taking on that role at times. Julie Parker Communications presents a two-day course on improving your public speaking skills for presenting at community events, law enforcement ceremonies, before political boards and councils and even on-camera. This course highlights public speaking best practices and offers practical exercises with constructive feedback from seasoned public speaking professionals. Training topics include:

  • Prepping for Presentations: Organization and Structure
  • Messaging and Bridging
  • Engaging Your Audience: Paint a Picture and Evoke Emotion
  • Optics
  • Body Language and Nonverbal Communication
  • Controlling the Environment and Officer Safety
  • Overcoming Nerves

Let us help you unlock your public speaking potential and elevate your communication skills. Our in-depth training will equip you with the skills and, perhaps most importantly, the practice in a low-risk environment, to better bring the messages of your agency to the community it serves.

Effective public communication has never been more complex or more important. Obtain time-tested tools from two communications instructors highly experienced in managing the message. As two former journalists, Ashley (James) Wilson and Emilie (Voss) Eager have extensive backgrounds in public speaking. Don't miss this opportunity to elevate your communications skills and make an impact for your organization.

Emilie Eager brings a diverse background, merging her media, law enforcement and public relations expertise. Previously, Julie Parker hired her to help lead the Media Relations Bureau for the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia. While there she graduated from the PERF Senior Management Institute for Police. She was also honored as a 3-time Emmy award winning journalist during an extensive broadcast career. Emilie joins Julie Parker Communications after overseeing public relations for CARFAX, a leading brand in automotive.

Ashley Wilson is an award-winning journalist specializing in media training and effective public speaking and presentation. She most recently anchored Good Morning Maryland in Baltimore. Ashley also worked for the Fox News Channel and local stations in Salisbury, Maryland, and Toledo, Ohio. In Toledo, she was responsible for a weekly franchise called “Most Wanted Wednesday,” which helped law enforcement catch upwards of 100 suspects. Ashley has an M.B.A. with a concentration in Homeland Security.

This course has been approved by Virginia DCJS for 15 hours of Career Development in-service credits.

Training certificates will be sent upon completion.
